Policy

At Chain & Blade, we inspects the integrity of each saw chain and each blade to the best of our ability.

In doing so, we sometimes come across a chain or blade that should not be sharpened.

Therefore, we reserve the right to decline services which we feel could pose a risk of bodily injury.

Because we do not sell new product to replace defective material, some clients may choose to go elsewhere.

We may lose an opportunity to retain that client, but we will not risk injury to them for monetary gain.

Thanks for your understanding.

-

There is limited room in BIG DAVE (the drop off / pick up box).

As such, if an item has not been picked up in a reasonable time frame, we may remove it from the security box.

We will contact you and supply you with a new box number and combination once a box becomes available.

This is a rare occasion and if need be, you can contact us and we may be able to meet you on site.

-

Our promise to you:

If you are not happy with a sharpening, then we are not either.

Let us know and we will make it right or refund your money, your choice

Chainsaw chain information

If you have the original packaging for your chain, please include it (or the data provided on it) when you drop it off.

Some shops I use to know set up the grinder at a 30/85/10 configuration and sharpen all the chains to it.

Proper sharpening takes time. First, the identity of the the chain has to be determined to set the angles correctly.

We use factory data charts when possible to get the right configuration unless our client has a special request.

Then a chain must be ground SLOWLY to avoid heating the metal. The overheating will usually cause the tooth to become blue, not black.

The tooth may loose its temper and can get mad at you if you're not careful. Premature dulling usually follows.

The black you may see on the chain is probably resin that was adhered to the tooth and was "baked" onto it in the sharpening process.

A few passes with a wire brush will normally remove the black residue or a special solvent can be used to clean the chain.

The depth gauge determine the amount each tooth will "dig in" on its path through the wood.

Too little and the saw rides on the wood. This is evident by the small chips it produces. It may cause the operator to "push" the saw.

I remember an old timer use to tell me "Let the saw do the work". A properly sharpened chain will do just that.

Too much and the saw will tend to buck or bounce. It will overwork the saw, causing unnecessary wear on the sprocket and other parts.

Both conditions are less productive and potentially dangerous.

A husky area rep told me once that a lot of loggers in Maine stop cutting after half an hour and file their chain.

He stated that the time spent to do this outweighed the loss in production do to a dull chain.

Consequently speaking, if you hand file your chains correctly and often, grinding on a machine is minimized considerably.

Mower blade information

Mower blades are not suppose to be sharpened to a point. There is a "flat face" of about 1/64' (See "B" on assorted photos page) to prevent premature rolling of the cutting edge of a blade.
